Standing on theEDGE
May 1 to May 31, 2008
“During the past quarter century, literally thousands of school-based programs have demonstrated beyond question that the arts can not only bring coherence to our fragmented academic world, but through the arts, students’ performance in other academic disciplines can be enhanced as well.”
~ Earnest L Boyer, president Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
This May, the Maple Ridge Art Gallery provides an opportunity for the public to become voyeurs into the world of youth. Join us in this celebration of youthful expressions in an exhibit called standing on the EDGE; happening through the month of May, from the first to the thirty first, at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery.
Like adults, youth are complex and come with varied responses to the milieu called their life. Some youth show signs of a mind that is socially inquisitive and questioning, others show more poetic inclinations, explored through the beauty of artistic formal elements. Yet, in all of these responses there is one common denominator, each uses art as a tool to explore their thoughts and feelings, to identify not only who they are but what they hold dear; as simple, or as complex as it may be.
In the exhibit standing on the EDGE the public has an opportunity to enjoy the reflections of youth, as it is seen by youth, through fine art, graphics, video, poetry and sculpture. In the last weekend of May we’ll be planning for a closing gala with students performing monologues, playing music and reciting poetry. For further information please contact the Maple Ridge Art Gallery at 604-467-5855.
The Maple Ridge Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges its exhibit sponsors and donors; Sure Print & Copy Centre, Benjamin Moore, and Maple Ridge Florist.

These photos were taken during a group mural project done in conjunction with this exhibit. We offered local students the chance to work on a mural in any style. These young ladies responded and were fearless when it came to putting their ideas on the wall. The results are absolutely fabulous!/bigger>/bigger>/color>
/bigger>/bigger>/color> This project was made possible with the help of Benjamin Moore Paint in Maple Ridge. The manager’s generous donation of paint and supplies gave the girls the materials they needed to complete the project. We supplied them with the space and the walls to do it! A great time was had by all!/bigger>/bigger>/color>
